White Lies by Jayne Ann Krentz
In Jayne Ann Krentz's second addition to the Arcane Society series, Jake Salter works for the psychic detective agency of J&J as a consultant. He's investigating an important case when Claire Lancaster arrives on the scene. Claire wasn't supposed to be a factor, but now she's here and Jake has an intense desire to get to know her very well indeed.
Claire's ability to tell truth from deception is all that saved her half sister from death at the hands of her husband eight months before. Now Claire is back in Arizona at the behest of her father and she's become the target of someone out for revenge.
White Lies introduces J&J, the psychic detective agency of the Arcane Society into a contemporary setting. White Lies is a suspenseful tale of romance and mystery as Claire and Jake try to discover who might be out to harm Claire and make her look guilty of murder.
Jake has a take charge attitude and a talent for dealing with danger. I really liked him and think his man-in-charge attitude gets credit for that. I prefer JAK's Amanda Quick historicals for this reason usually, because I pefer the strong, take-charge heroes--at least those who have an equally strong appreciation for the heorine and her abilities.
Claire's take on lying is a key part of the story, and this is what made her such a great character. Krentz built Claire's personality through sharp words and great visuals early in the story and the attraction between Jake and her sizzled. Although Jayne Ann Krentz's heroines are most always from the same mold, Claire was one heroine that stands out in my mind. Krentz made Claire interesting and memorable.
I liked White Lies, but I will warn you that this isn't a character focused book. The focus stays firmly on the mystery and suspense plot. The romance is hot, but you won't wonder if the characters will get together, only if they'll survive to enjoy it.
