Need writer friends for my blogroll

I need more writer friends, but I feel weird about just putting anyone on my list of links.

This is to all the writers I know. If you wouldn’t mind being my “writer friend”, let me know so I can link you up. :-)

Here today, gone tomorrow publishers

I’ve received several emails lately from publishers (specifically epublishers) wanting to have their publisher sites listed on my website for writers (HEA). Many of these publishers have only one or two books in their catalogs so far. I have no way to know if they’re going to be around past next week, so I generally say no to these link requests.

But it leaves me wondering if I should pass this information on to interested writers. New markets are always of note, but what level of responsibility do I have if I spread information about a publisher and that publisher turns out to be a scam (or someone who just didn’t understand how to run a publishing business)?

I hesitate to put the information out there, even knowing that it’s not my fault if the publisher turns out to be a here-today-gone-tomorrow publisher.

Any thoughts?

Tips for fighting writer’s block

First, what is writer’s block? Does it exist? Many authors say yes, many say no. Personally, I just think it depends on how you define writer’s block.

So let’s define writer’s block.

Writer’s block is the inability to write when there’s no good reason why you shouldn’t be writing right along.

And yes, I believe it exists.

Good reading

I recently had the pleasure of reading Sylvia Day’s new book Bad Boys Ahoy! so I could interview her about the book. I was excited to realize this was a historical entry into the Bad Boys anthology series from Brava.

I don’t usually recommend books on my blog, but I thought I would recommend this one. I really enjoyed reading the book and I think a lot of people are going to like this one. Especially those who enjoyed the earlier Bad Boys anthologies but grew tired of them. This isn’t the same old thing. It’s the first historical Bad Boys anthology from Brava.

Off-topic Post

I try not to veer too far from writing in my blog posts, but sometimes you just have to.

Do I read authors or books?

I read an interesting post on Romancing the Blog today. It was my first real visit to the site and the word spreadsheet in the first sentence caught my interest. (Yes, I’m addicted to spreadsheets.) The post was When do you say when? by Yap Away Jay.

The post poses the question of when do you quit giving new authors the chance to impress you with their books. (Trust me, I’m paraphrasing here. If it sounds intriguing, I suggest you read the post.)

Although I agreed in principle with most of the stuff she said, I’ve found that with new authors I rarely remember their names, unless I just happen to love–and I mean LOVE–their books.

I write best when I’m not writing

Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn’t the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment. –Robert Benchley

What a wonderful quote, and true.

Why is it that writing is easier when I really ought to be doing something else? Not to mention that writing gets about as hard as it gets when I’m supposed to be writing.

I’ve made time for it. I have all my equipment at hand. My book-in-progress is just waiting for me to write another word, another sentence, another page.

Regular Posts Equals Regular Reading

I’ve tried to put myself into the frame of mind of a reader today, and visit multiple blog sites for ideas. But the only thing I truly got from the experience was a knowledge that as a reader, I would be very disappointed with my blog.

Regular updates are important, and I have some mighty bad posting habits. I’m an erratic blogger at best, and an unreliable blogger at worst.

So, since I never did get around to making myself any new year’s resolutions–of any kind–today is as good a day as any to decide to up the ante on my blogging.

My 2006 New Year’s Resolutions:

Why is writing so hard sometimes?

I’m trying out the trackbacks. Who knows if I’m using them correctly, because although I’ve had a blog for over a year, I rarely do more than post entries and read other peoples’ posts.

Heather tagged me with an interesting question (and if I’m using “tagged” in the wrong context you can tell me, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever get it right). She asks, “Why is writing so hard sometimes?”

I don’t know. More often than not, for me, writing is hard. If I knew how to make it easy, ever, I’d sell the idea for a million and retire for a couple of years. (A million doesn’t go as far these days as it used to, does it?)

Moved from Blogger to WordPress

I’ve officially moved my blog from Blogger to WordPress, although the link is the same (http://www.teresciaharvey.com/blog).

The move was quick, but I haven’t yet had time to work on my template, so the new blog pages look pretty generic at the moment. We’ll see if I have time over the next few days to get it in order and put up something a little more in keeping with the look of my website. As plain as it is, I love the simplicity of my website. Black and white, with few distractions. And then there’s HEA, which I love just as much, even though it’s not as simple a look.

At any rate, it might take me a while to get it finished, since I’ve begun building a new home as of today…with my husband’s help, of course. :-)
